PM Surya Ghar: 9.09 lakh households across 19,035 housing societies benefit from ₹422 crore subsidy

Gujarat leads in installations, Maharashtra in capacity. 2 Min Read Over 9.09 lakh households across 19,035 housing societies in India have benefited from ₹422 crores in subsidy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as per latest data. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said that rooftop solar capacity of 278+ MW installed by Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs)/housing societies under the scheme is allowing them to reduce recurring costs while transitioning to cleaner energy.

Also Read: PM Surya Ghar scheme crosses 50 lakh rooftop solar homes milestone The eligible solar capacity yardstick under PM Surya Ghar allows not having separate systems for individual households, while the eligible solar capacity is calculated at benchmark of 3 kWp per household, subject to a maximum project capacity of 500 kWp. The generated clean energy is used to operate lifts, common-area lighting, water pumps, security systems, and STPs (Sewage treatment plants). Gujarat leads amongst states in the total installations, with 9,377 housing societies setting up 106.18 MW of solar capacity to benefit 3.54 lakh households.

Maharashtra recorded the highest solar capacity, with 7,571 RWAs collectively installing 138.99 MW to benefit 4.28 lakh households. Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh have implemented community solar projects across 273, 640, and 248 RWAs, respectively. To make community-scale rooftop solar financially viable, India provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) of ₹18,000 per kW for eligible RWA and GHS projects.

Housing societies located in Special Category States and Union Territories including the North-Eastern states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep are eligible for a higher CFA of ₹19,800 per kW. A monthly spend of ₹18,000 on electricity used for common-area facilities dropped to ₹3,000 per month for Surya Square RWA in Lucknow after installing rooftop solar facility under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
